This year, I would like to encourage my clients to think differently about time.
We speak of spending time. Let’s rather consider how we can invest our time … and it means checking what it is in our lives that we treasure.
It seems, as we get older, that time is like sand running through our fingers – it disappears so quickly, no matter how much we try to hold onto it.
Fleeting time, though, can be a gift. We realise time is a limited resource, and how we invest it is essential to our quality of life.
Take yourself back, in your imagination, to your childhood. You may remember asking (more than once!): “Are we there yet?”
Your impatience signalled an excitement for what lay ahead – a coastal holiday with that first glimpse of the sea with its sharp salty scent in the air.
Or perhaps it was that first day back at school, filled with familiar faces and hugs from friends. With it often came the security of knowing these days would be predictable and secure, with a clear end goal.
So much to look forward to, so much to achieve, and this anticipation gave us energy and a positive outlook.
As a Certified Financial Planner®, I am focused on what will give my clients the most return on their investment. The obvious resource for this is money. We place hard-earned savings into an investment that will give the best return.
I see time in the same way – an equally valuable resource that needs to be invested wisely. Knowing what return we want on our time helps us to invest it in the right way.
How are you investing your time?
What brings you joy? I wonder if you have given some thought to the next phase of your life. What will energise you and cultivate a positive attitude in both the present and future?
Resilient people know that they will face unforeseen events … and they prepare themselves for it. How? They make sure that their investments – of time, of money, of their attention – make this moment a gift to themselves.
As a Certified Financial Transitionist™, I help my clients plan for the next phase of their lives. A significant part of that planning is treasuring the present and knowing what gives our lives meaning.
I would love to hear from you and about where you are on your journey. Make it a year to uncover your treasure – a life well-lived with no regrets.
